Three civilians were killed, and five injured, Tuesday morning when Abo Zahra bridge collapsed in Alexandria. The bridge crossed over El Nasr Canal – a small irrigation canal in the Borg Al Arab area.
A team from the Public Prosecution Office arrived at the scene to commence an investigation and evaluate the incident.
A specialized technical committee was assigned to write a report regarding the collapse and collect more details from the Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
The secretary of the ministry of agriculture, Mostafa Kamel El Bakhshawan, stated that the incident was a result of farmers trying to expand the canal without informing specialized officials
This is not the first time for an incident of this nature to occur in Egypt. On February 11, 2014 a bridge in el Marg, Cairo collapsed due to fire catching in the shacks underneath it, resulting in the death of one individual.
